New Fic Preview

I mentioned recently that I'd had an idea for a Moshang fic. I'm still working on it right now (I'm expecting it to be a oneshot, but my estimations of fic length mostly turn out so wildly inaccurate that it could easily end up some 500,000 word epic that I'll still be working on in 10 years time so we'll see).

But in the meantime I thought I'd share the opening part. It's based on the idea that MBJ has a protagonist halo of his own, since he is literally God's Favourite Blorbo

The first time Mobei-jun died, he was 4 years old.

He was scared & he was running & he was supposed to fight but humans were way bigger & scarier than they’d seemed in the stories & his uncle had vanished & he was alone & they were chasing him! With swords! (And arrows too! But they’d run out of those by now & luckily the one with the bow was a lousy shot & the only arrow which had actually found its target had only got him in the shoulder, which was fine.)

(It hurt. It hurt a lot.)

He’d been running forever & ever & he was tired & hungry & way too warm & he wanted his mother. Or his father. Or his uncle. But his mother was dead, & his father was never there, & his uncle had abandoned him. So he had to keep running & running. A few times he’d managed to get away & thought he’d been safe, but each time they’d found him again before he’d had a proper chance to rest or think properly.

How did they always find him? They were tracking him somehow, but he didn’t know how to hide from them & he couldn’t think & he couldn’t disappear in a gust of wind like his uncle could or become a cloud of mist like his father or call down lightning like his mother & disappear in a flash.

And they were so close he could feel hot breath on his back & he tripped on a fallen branch. He’d fallen a thousand times before but this time he didn’t have a chance to get up before the monsters were upon him & one of them thrust his sword though his chest & it hurt, & then it stopped hurting.

His last thought, stupidly, was that his father would be so disappointed in him – he was supposed to be a fearsome demon prince, & one day he’d be King! But he’d acted like a baby & shamed his family.

And then he woke up.

He pulled himself out of the undergrowth he’d been lying in, branches tearing at his clothing.

But… he’d been dead, hadn’t he? The sword had gone right through him.

He looked down. The was a small tear in his shirt, & it was surrounded by blood… But no sign of any wound under it. And there were lots of tears in his clothing from all the branches & thorns that he’d run through, some of which had been sharp enough to cut skin, so between that & the arrow there was plenty of blood staining his clothing.

He touched his chest, confused.

There was a sound off to one side, & his head snapped round, startled.

A huge creature that looked somewhat like a horse but with branches growing out of its head was staring straight at him.

He froze, his heart, which had calmed a little at the lack of pursuit, broke into a gallop once more.

And then a cloud of mist appeared before him & then his father was there.

“So, this is where you’ve been,” he said. “Come on.”

He looked back at the tree monster as his father reached out to grab his arm, but it was gone, disappeared in an instant. And then the forest was gone, & they were home, his father was dragging him along a corridor towards the healer’s rooms.

That must be it, he thought. They’d been just about to kill him, & he’d been such a coward that he’d fainted, & a monster had shown up & either eaten them or they’d run away in fear.

His father said nothing as he left him with the healer to have his wounds tended to. The healer said nothing about any fatal wounds. His uncle said nothing about leaving him.

Mobei-Jun said nothing.

Six Sentence Sunday: Father-Son Bonding

From The Last Firebender.

Ozai surveyed them, but his words were clearly meant for Zuko. “Remember, you are here to observe & learn only.” He turned to Zuko, fixing him with a severe look. “I don’t think I need to remind you of the consequences for speaking up when you haven’t been asked to.”

He reached out & brushed his fingers over the edge of Zuko’s scar. Zuko froze, but by the time he could even begin to figure out how he should react to that, the hand had dropped & his father had turned back to face the room once more.

Good Dad Ozai AU

My brain decided to come out with another AU & I like how the extract I wrote came out.

This is kinda a combination of @fire-lady-ilah‘s ‘Good Dad Ozai’ AU, & a fic I read recently (can’t remember who by) where Zuko was an only child because Ursa had died in childbirth. IDK if I’ll even end up doing anything with this but here ya go anyway.

-----

He should hate this child. This sickly little thing that had killed his wife & ensured he would have no further heirs until father saw fit to allow him to marry again (which Ozai doubted he would - this would be seen as Ozai's failure & punished accordingly). A worthless son.

He picked it up, ready to cast it out the window there & then, not even waiting for the dawn.

The child opened its eyes. Ozai's eyes. His mother's eyes. 'You got your eyes from your mother. And your name.' A small hand reached out from the blanket & gripped one of his fingers with a surprising strength.

Something uncoiled within him & roared, 'Mine!'.

He did not throw the child. He did not put it back in the crib, either. Instead he sat in a chair in the corner, holding the small bundle in his arms as they both waited to see if Azulon's prediction that it would not survive the night would come to pass.

A slight lightening of the sky through the east-facing window told him the sun was about to rise, & he took his son outside to see his first dawn. He warmed the air around them to ensure it would not be his last.

He felt the dawn as much as he saw it, his inner flame responding to Agni's light. And, in the child, a small spark flickered to life. Faint, as easily snuffed out as the child itself, but nonetheless there.

"We shall prove ourselves to my father together," he crooned to his son.

Six Sentence Sunday: Zhaozai Palooza Preview

Preview of something I’m working on for @zhaozaipalooza

He’d given up waiting for his father to arrange a marriage for him, which was the normal way of things, & accepted that he’d have to seek out a bride for himself. The party was an ideal place to look; everyone present had been personally invited by the Firelord, demonstrating their status & royal favour. Anyone he chose from this select group would surely be met with his father’s approval.

(Perhaps Ozai himself might even earn his father’s approval…)

But every time he set his sights on a potential candidate, he was rudely interrupted by his brother. The man was already an incorrigible flirt, but one glass of sake in him & he would not leave a woman alone – including women that Ozai was trying to talk to.

For the Dark!Lu Ten AU

This got kinda long so I figured I'd make a new post...

I was just thinking about the dark!Lu Ten AU that [tumblr.com profile] electronswrites came up with (specifically this scenario based on an ask from [tumblr.com profile] paintedbluerose) & came up with a new angle: A corruption arc for Zuko. Special offer - 2 dark Fire Princes for the price of 1!

Basically, as in the linked post, Lu Ten sells Zuko out & the Earth Kingdom takes him prisoner. They torture him for information but get nothing. But things go awry when they try to offer him for ransom.

Because look, Ozai might not care about his son, & Zuko might be banished, but this is still his son we're talking about here, & if news that the Earth Kingdom had him were to leak then that would be an unacceptable humiliation for the Fire Nation. He still ain’t gonna give them shit though, so he just strings the negotiators along while instructing Azula to take a detour on her way to Ba Sing Se. Or gets someone else to do it (a job for Combustion Man or the Rough Rhinos, perhaps?).

He'd planned just have Zuko quietly & conveniently die & had already written the eulogy. But then he learns that Lu Ten is alive (even though Ozai had a deal that he would be killed) & - apparently - Iroh was the one who ordered that Zuko be given to the Earth Kingdom. To him, it all looks so obvious: Iroh latches on to Zuko so that he has an heir ready for when he takes the throne (back) from Ozai (why else would he want to spend time with Zuko???), but then his own heir reappears & Zuko is now surplus to requirements. And Ozai is pissed. Zuko & Azula are his possessions! How dare Iroh think he can use one of them as his pawn? Well, two can play that game, & Ozai does not intend to lose.

Zuko has spent less time in Earth Kingdom hands than if he'd had to wait till Iroh could get him out after the war, but he's still in a pretty bad way. So he ends up in the palace infirmary, high as a kite on painkillers, while Ozai & Azula tell him how awful it is that Iroh did that, & doesn't that prove that he & his son don't deserve the throne & that Ozai was right? But don't worry, you're home now, with your family. You're safe here with us... And Zuko is listening to all this, drugged & in pain, & it all makes so much sense. And his father did rescue him. That must mean he actually does love Zuko after all, right? Ozai praises him for not telling his interrogators anything (just because he doesn't know anything useful doesn't mean he's going to talk) & Zuko absolutely seizes on that.

Maybe Ozai would claim those letters that Zuko found were forged. Maybe Azula would gaslight him into believing that their cousin had always been like this & their father was just trying to protect them by getting rid of him. Or maybe Zuko would be beyond caring by this point.

Ozai publicises the 'Iroh & Lu Ten totally sold Zuko to the Earth Kingdom' story to discredit his brother & nephew & head off any potential bids for the throne, so the Gaang find out what happened. Naturally they don't believe it at first - they joined forces with Iroh & Lu Ten in Ba Sing Se, & sure Lu Ten seems kinda weird, but Iroh is chill so they give him the benefit of the doubt. But Lu Ten doesn't even try to deny it. Hey, he did them a favour by getting rid of the guy who chased them for months! Iroh is devastated.

And he can't do anything about it. Even if he was desperate enough to give himself up in the hope that he'd get a chance to apologise to his nephew, he knows he has to teach the Avatar firebending (sure as hell can't leave that task to Lu Ten). And he can't reason with his son, because as far as Lu Ten is concerned, this just proves him right - see how easily Zuko went back to that traitor! They find a poster with the text of a speech the Firelord gave about how horrified he is that those monsters could do such a thing to his beloved son who he has missed sooooo much, which Iroh sees for the obvious propaganda it is but Lu Ten accepts as truth & cannot be convinced otherwise. (The speech includes mention of some of the injuries Zuko came home with, & Iroh hopes they're as much a lie as the declarations of love.)

Iroh has to deal with the fact that both of his sons have gone dark. Also, this would probably result in the Fire Nation winning, or at least not losing as conclusively as they did in canon.

Because assuming that Aang's encounter with the lion turtle still happens then Aang would still have everything he needs to be able to defeat Ozai. And Iroh would probably guess about the 'burn it all down with airships' thing because he knows what his brother is like & airships provide a great way of causing maximum damage. So not much change there. But Zuko not defecting means that the Boiling Rock doesn't happen (or if it does then it doesn't involve him), so Mai & Ty Lee don't betray Azula to save him, so she's not going to go into a downward spiral & dismiss anyone who looks at her funny. Anyone showing up at the Fire Palace is going to face a united front of Azula, Zuko, Mai & Ty Lee, as well as her Dai Li agents (& any other guards she dismissed offscreen in canon).

Bonus potential sub-scenarios )

Six Sentence Sunday: ‘Mai is a Comedian’ Edition

From chapter 6 of Into the Fire:

“Um, hi,” said the teenager in Firelord robes. “You must be Chief Hakoda.”

“Nope, sorry,” said the girl behind him, who had followed him in. “Turns out my uncle sent the wrong guy, but I brought him in anyway.”

Firelord Not-Ozai rolled his eyes. “Real funny, Mai.”
