100% completed Lego Horizon Adventures & got the platinum trophy. Loved it. I think my favourite part was probably Teersa. All the voice actors were clearly having a blast, but her character in HZD was basically a background character who was barely in it & she clearly relished the opportunity to go a little nuts ("TEERSA SMASH!" lol). It did get a little grindy when it came to levelling up all the characters for the final trophy, but that's kind of on me. The intention is probably that you'll unlock it gradually by occasionally dipping in & playing a bit here & there. Even with the restriction that I have less than a month to do this before my PS+ expires (I'll likely buy it properly, but who knows when that will happen) it's doable. But I know me & if I put it down I will get distracted & not pick it back up (case in point: I still have not got around to replaying Horizzon Forbidden West for NG+).

I can particularly see this as a good purchase on the Switch. It'd be perfect for picking up & playing on the go. Fun & engaging, but not something where I'd feel frustrated at being interrupted because my bus arrived or I got called in for my appointment or whatever.

Next up: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

EDIT: Bailed on Ratchet & Clank a few minutes in. This game is just not for me.

Wake Up Dead Man was so good! A little slow at the start, though that's mostly because I hate religion. And ngl I was still expecting standard film pacing, which is a mistake in a Knives Out film & I really should know better at this point lol. I'm currently chilling in a Tim Hortons afterwards, enjoying a pistachio & white choc latte, & picked up some timbits for later.

I definitely need to rewatch at home to catch everything I totally missed. Though I feel this won't be one I'll watch over & over like the previous two.

First time I've been to the cinema since before covid (last film I saw in the cinema was Rise of Skywalker, which would put anyone off wasting money on cinema tickets, especially considering how much they cost nowadays). To be fair, there's been stuff since that I might have been interested in seeing, but the cost of tickets means I have to be sure I really want to see something, & have money to burn that I'm willing to make a risky bet with. And have the time. This was the first time all those things have applied.

Also today I checked out a vintage kilo sale on my way to the cinema, but didn't see anything that interesting.

Woo! The new Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man, is actually showing at a cinema near me! Just one cinema, & not at either of the two nearest me, but pretty close & not a hassle to get to. Glass Onion wasn't showing anywhere remotely near me.

Have to wait a few days because my parents are in town & expect me to spend time with them (while being vague on their plans for each day, so I spend my day sitting waiting to see if they'll arrange to meet up & so get nothing done *sigh*). But hey a few days is fine.

I've now finished Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know. I really wasn't kidding previously when I blamed my slow progress with this one on distractions from other media. Last week I was at 30% & now I've finished. I couldn't stop reading. I love how few fucks Wenren E gives, & the side characters were all entertaining.

Interestingly it seems there's going to be an official English translation, but it's from a small indie publisher where I may or may not have to just through a bunch of hoops to the point where it might be unobtainable for me, so we'll see.

thispatternismine: (HZD - Heart)
Currently reading Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know, about 30% of the way through. It's been slow going, but that's because I've had other stuff going on (Horizon Forbidden West, Powerwash Simulator 2, Whispers of Fate, misc life stuff) that keeps distracting me, not a reflection on the novel itself, which continues to be great. Also I don't dare read it in public because of the potential for awkward explanations for why I'm laughing out loud. 'well you see this one character cut another character's arm off & fed it to someone else... No it's fine it's made of mushroom.')

Favourite bit so far is probably Wenren E dangling an unconscious Baili Qingmiao off a cliff on a piece of silk like he's going fishing, just to see if her protagonist nature will open the way they're looking for.

thispatternismine: (tteotm - lss & ttj)
Absolutely loving Whispers of Fate so far. The story is interesting with plenty of twists & turns, the action sequences are epic, stunning visuals, the comedic moments are used sparingly & are actually funny.

That opening theme is bloody awful though.

Spent basically all my free time recently playing Horizon Forbidden West (hence the lack of updates). I've finished it now, including the Burning Shores expansion, & I have mixed feelings. Possibly incoherent stream of consciousness rambling ahead.

I expect a sequel to expand on a game's mechanics & add new twists, but it feels like they went way to & over-complicated everything. Every tiny step of every aspect of every mechanic had a bunch of complexity & extra steps added in a way that often felt less like innovating so concepts don't get tired & more like adding random obstacles.

Puzzles in HZD are occasional little brain teasers to add some flavour, where to elements of the puzzle are in one space & you can easily figure out what you need to do, so you can get on with trying to solve the thing. Puzzles in HFW are constant multi-step chores that made it hard to figure out what you next step was because the elements of the puzzle were scattered all over & there was no obvious way of figuring out what your next step was. And there were often steps on top of steps because you'd go through a whole bunch of moving something & then going somewhere else & pulling a lever & then going somewhere else to make a hole in a wall & then moving something else & then & then & then... & you get through it (with the help of a guide) & it turned out that was one to find a key. And then you've got to got through another series of steps to find a code. And then a bunch more steps to find a battery. And then more steps to find a charger for the battery to power something to access wherever the door is. And then you have to - you guessed it! - go through more steps to get to the door. There was one where I looked at the guide for how to solve it, saw the number of steps, saw that it was just for half of an access code (yep, not even the whole code), & it wasn't even an interesting series of steps (go here, move thing, go somewhere else, move thing, etc), & I could just look up the code online by scrolling down on the guide I was following & typing it straight into the console. Which I did. It got to the point where I stopped even trying to figure things out - as soon as I saw signs of a puzzle I'd just check a guide & follow it (usually while muttering, 'how tf was I suppose to figure out I needed to do that particular series of steps in that particular order?'). There were occasional 'ooh this is fun!' puzzling sections where there was a clear next step I could find by looking around where I was, but those were rare.

Aloy is often supposed to drop hints in dialogue, but the implementation of that was... not great. Sometimes she'd only make the comment when she was standing in a spot where the only reason she'd be there was if I'd solved the problem already (the worst instance of that was a cauldron where she was supposed to shoot some cannisters being carried through the area & ride the resulting blast to access platforms, & according to really snide people online when I was looking up how to get through the area, she clearly commented on the cannisters when entering the area. Except she said nothing... until I got to the next area, which used a similar mechanic, & got to a point where I was most of the way through that area, & THEN she mentioned the cannisters!). Other times she'd comment on something as if she was right next to it, because the game decided 'eh, close enough', but she was round a corner & down a corridor & the thing wasn't visible on the Focus from where she was standing so I'm looking around going 'girl what are you talking about???'. Or someone would talk over her.

Some of the added ideas where interesting in theory, but poorly implemented. I loved the idea of having a resource where you could hear a audio cue when you were nearby that you could follow! But why were there different sizes that were treated as different resources? A greenshine slab was bigger than a greenshine fragment, but couldn't be used to buy anything that requires a greenshine fragment. Meanwhile both bluegleam (in Frozen Wilds & brimshine i Burning Shores were worth x number of pieces. The food giving buffs to certain stats was interesting, but I never ended up using it was it wasn't easy to check what its effects where without digging through the menus, so it just took up slots in my inventory & meant more stuff to scroll through while looking for a health potion. I fully support the idea of giving Aloy proper melee combat options, because sometimes close range combat is unavoidable. But it was so slow & clunky & timings on the combos were poorly explained, & it was a nightmare. Maybe I'm expecting too much from decades of playing Devil May Cry games, but I found it awful. Splitting the merchants into specialties made some kind of sense, but resulted in a lot of running around (& getting lost in some maze-like settlements) to figure out what I wanted to buy & what I could afford. Maybe should have been kept for some of the larger settlements & have general merchants for the rest. The idea of adding variants to machines was cool, but was overdone to the point where even at the end of the game I was having to scan every single damn machine to figure out what ammo to use, because I could never remember (why the hell were there so many types of Burrowers that were just minute variants of each other, when the thing is just a glorified Watcher?). The added variety of weapons & ammo was great in theory but in practice making a decent loadout with a variety of ammo types was a nightmare & some of the ammo type slots were redundant because why would you need separate basic & advanced versions of the same ammo? You're not going to use the basic one you've unlocked the advanced variety, so just have them replace them!).

There was other frustrating things that felt more like bugs. A few quests where I was meant to defeat enemies in order to progress, & the enemies are super aggressive & would normally attack on sight, but instead they hid away, & in one case barely reacted even when I started shooting at it. There's also a flying mount you can unlock un override for, & an option to un-invert the controls, which I picked because I found the standard flying controls confusing. But then in Burning Shores you unlock a variant that can also diver into water, in order to do a quest that requires a lot of quick dodging, & THE CONTROLS SWITCH BACK WITHOUT TELLING ME. I was struggling to control the damn thing & not figuring out why it wasn't doing what I wanted. Only later when I was flying around without the stress of being shot at & therefore had the time to notice things properly did I realise it was using inverted controls.

Also getting rid of the lure call ability & throwing rocks instead was annoying as most of the time machines barely reacted, so I had to throw rock after rock after rock to attract their attention. Cool that there was no upper limit on the amount of rocks you can have in your inventory though, as I love the crunching sound as you pick them up.

Despite all the complaining, I didn't totally hate the game. I loved the story, & how it emphasized friendship & teamwork instead of having Aloy be some lone wolf chosen one figure who was apart from everyone else. Though I did get annoyed at them getting in the way at various points.

Having to collect part of machines as an additional step to unlock overrides you learning from a cauldron makes them feel more earned & is an example of an added complexity that actually deepens the gameplay.

THE ROMANCE AT THE END OF BURNING SHORES!!!! I loved the rapport between them from the start & when some of the things Aloy was saying towards the end had me getting a vibe that I was putting down to ship[per brain, & then she went & asked & I hit the 'yes' option so fast I' amazed I didn't break the analogue stick! It almost made up for that chore of a multi-step boss fight. Almost.

GILDUN! <3 I was so happy to see him back! He's one of my favourite side characters, probably because he reminds me of my dad, who has the exact same inability to shut up & a tendency to get distracted. I'm not saying my dad is the type to lose an important object to a Snapmaw & get himself locked in a ruin but... No I am saying that actually. He would. He absolutely would.

The most important improvement: O can cancel out of Focus mode. Thank you thank you thank you! So many occasions in the first game where I automatically hit O to cancel because it's such an ingrained instinct, only to have Aloy do an awkward slo-mo roll & inevitably get smacked about by the machine I was fighting that I needed to exit Focus mode quickly so I could evade or attack properly

I have a bunch of photos already that'll get posted at some point. I need to do a New Game+ playthrough though, & will probably gather more.

thispatternismine: (when destiny brings the demon - lty & sj)
The ending aired on Monday but I put off watching the last few episodes because I couldn't bring myself to let it end. (And because I got into replaying Horizon Zero Dawn again. But mostly about the not being ready thing.)

Ah, so good! But...

HOW DARE THEY PLAY WITH MY EMOTIONS LIKE THAT IN THE LAST FEW MINUTES?! Go to jail for 1,000 years!

That thank you message was pretty cute. :D

thispatternismine: (when destiny brings the demon - lty & sj)
- Telling the heavens to go fuck themselves is a power move.

- Highlight for spoilers! *Badass immortal ruler + cinnamon roll demon queen?* This drama gets me. It's like it reached into my thoughts & came up with the ultimate pairing, just for me.

- *sigh* I did not get my wish regarding the 3ML's fate. Highlight for spoilers! *Actually frustrated by how that was handled.
FL: I know he betrayed us & violated my boundaries & was willing to do whatever it took to erase my personality so I can be his dream woman, but he says he didn't mean it & I think he deserves another chance.
3ML: *immediately makes things worse*
FL: shocked-pikachu-face.jpg

Like, REALLY?
*

- Hands up who else ships Random Demon Butcher Lady & Lady Cultivator in Purple from episode 28?
*throws packet of meat* "Don't get emotional. It's leftovers."
"Who said I'm touched?" *tosses silk handkerchief on counter* "It's ruined embroidery."

They had 30 seconds of screentime & I am more invested in their relationship than some top billed cdrama couples.

thispatternismine: (when destiny brings the demon - lty & sj)
Watching When Destiny Brings the Demon & holy shit it's is amazing! If you're not watching this, I highly recommend it! To entice you, here are some random things that happen:

- A significant portion of the budget has gone on dry ice.

- ML holds FL to him, declaring that she will not die so long as he wishes her to remain alive, his face spattered with the blood of his enemies, as buildings burn around him & epic music plays. She is concerned about whether he's eating enough.

- ML shows up to a sparring display, throws an apple (well, a flower petal) of discord into the ring, & watches everyone biting each other's dicks off.

- FL receives a mysterious letter (that is clearly not from ML) inviting her to a midnight meeting & is like 'nah'. Common sense in a cdrama FL!

- ML needs to feed FL his blood (because it's magic) but she is unconscious & won't open her mouth. Clearly the only thing to do is to suck some of his blood into his own mouth & feed her mouth to mouth. There is simply no other way to achieve this.

- ML turns FL into an otter (because reasons) & is constantly petting her & carries her around everywhere & snuggles with her in bed. You could say the whole thing is... otterly adorable.

These things all happen within the first 10 episodes. It's not quite Till the End of the Moon levels of intense batshit, but damn it's close. I gotta say though, my favourite thing here might just be how it's shot. There's actual thought put into how scenes are blocked out & shots are framed. A couple of particular standouts that spring to mind: A shot where the ML draws a dagger while holding it in front of him, so his face is framed by the blade & his sleeve. And another is a scene where the 2FL is having a talk with the main antagonist & it's blocked & framed in such a way that they spend part of the scene back to back, which absolutely should not work & breaks basic rules of filmmaking, but works perfectly & underlines what is going on in that scene.

I withdraw everything I said about Mistakenly Saving the Villain. Got to about 25% & the story just started spinning its wheels. Main character fell into a coma for a decade so we got a timeskip, but it didn't feel as if anything had really changed aside from his personality disappearing. His drive to do medical research & help the love interest (to the point of torturing the guy who trafficked him & giving his soul to the LI as a birthday gift because death was too good for him!) sort of evaporates & he's just kind of there being useless. It's all so... meh.

I might have pushed through if it was just that but... An Long. He shows up, causes enormous damage breaking into the MC's home & bites a chunk out of the MC(!), who then APOLOGISES TO HIM for making him worry! Even though he wrote to him as soon as he was out of his coma, telling him he was fine & to stop trying to break in. But apparently it's all the MC's fault he did so anyway. Ignoring boundaries is fine! And he & the LI have an awkward rivalry over stuff that happened over the 10 year timeskip, but don't do anything about it for no other reason than to drag out what is almost certainly the most boring reveal in the history of literature when the MC finds out. That's okay though because he's not sticking around, righ- Oh, we're going on an awkward road trip because the MC wants them all to be a squad or something. No thanks. (And the author leaves an author's note reassuring the readers that don't worry he was going to get a good ending! I don't want him to have a good ending - I want him to die immediately.)

Threw in the towel at chapter 42 (33% of the way through).

I would have liked to have immediately leapt into the official translation of My Husband & I Sleep in a Coffin, but no bookshop in the UK is able to get their hands on a copy, it seems.

I've started on The White Cat's Divine Scratching Post. I'm liking what I've read so far, though I've only just started so I've yet to form any real opinion. (I was planning on starting The Beauty's Blade next, as it's next up in the publication order of the novels I'm checking out, but TBH I'll probably take one for the team & buy it regardless, as this is clearly 7S testing the waters regarding baihe.)

Holy shit am I going crazy? I restarted my (Windows 11) computer after an update & it played the Windows 7 startup sound at me?!?

(Especially confusing as I have the sound set as my text message notification tone on my phone, so it was like, oh I got a tex- wait hold on the sound isn't coming from the phone?)

Confused but delighted. The Win11 one was boring. I'm on an Insider build so no idea if this will stick around. Fingers crossed it does.

Now if they'd bring the *scrunch* sound when you empty the recycle bin back, that'd be great.

EDIT: Apparently it's a bug & they're planning on 'fixing' it. ;_;

Absolutely down for a new Lumines game! Especially with a Tetris Effect flavour. Also intrigued by Hirogami - its giving me Tearaway vibes. Sword of the Sea aka Totally Not A Journey Sequel Honest got an August 19th release date, & Ghost of Yotei has a gameplay deep dive coming next month. More Astro Bot challenge levels, which I'm sure will be great as soon as the game drops to an affordable price.

Also that official PlayStation fight stick looks cool.

Cool that Myst & Riven are showing up in the classics catalogue but I ain't paying for PS+, when I have them on my damn phone. Though I assume they'll be purchasable separately so that might be cool if they don't overcharge.

Love that Pragmata ended its trailer with a post-it note saying "it's real". They have definitely heard all the people going 'hey remember that trailer for that weird Capcom game that showed up in that one showcase years ago that felt more like a concept than a game, is that even a real game that's happening?'

That was it for me, but it was pretty packed & there were a bunch of games that I know others are excited for, & I'm happy for them. Some really wild concepts in there - wtf is even going on in Romeo is a Dead Man & Sea Remnants (I think - couldn't read the title on that one)? - & it's always nice to see games trying something different.

So that was pretty good, I thought. A whole 45 minutes too.

Highlights were Lost Soul Aside has been on my radar for a while & continues to look good. Excited to get a release date. May 30th - only a few months to wait! :D Onimusha: Way of the Sword is looking very cool, & I'm liking the glimpses we got of the protagonist's personality. Like, that he actually has one. No taciturn lone swordsman here. And the Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny remaster looks fine. Not enthusiastic I know, but I never played this one so there's no nostalgia here for me to get super hyped. Will likely pick it up when it comes out though. Dreams of Another looks super bizarre & interesting. And artistic third person shooter with a painted art style where you create stuff by shooting it? I am intrigued. Tides of Annihilation has a cool mix of fantasy elements & post apocalyptic setting, with maybe a dash of DMC in the gameplay. I'll need to see more before I get fully interested though.

There were a few others showed off that looked interesting, but I get the feeling they won't be for me. Darwin's Paradox looks cute but that is clearly a fiddly platformer that will frustrate me. The Midnight Walk has a cool style but I don't do well with first person games (I know it's in VR also but I don't have a headset anymore & not gonna pick one up just for this sorry lol). Blue Prince, mentioned in the PS+ section, looks like an interesting puzzle game but also first person. Hell is Us has interesting vibes but I'm not sure about anything else.

There was plenty of other stuff there that I'm not into, but I know others are hyped for & I'm happy for them.

Wandered down to a local event (basically an artisan/independent market with some entertainment), expecting I'd that I'd just wander round, maybe buy a brownie or two, maybe a lip balm because there was supposed to be a seller there who made them & I need some. The lip balm seller wasn't there, but I got a mug I'd been eyeing up at previous markets for half price (& it was £10 so that was a bargain). And there was a vintage stall in a separate room that I'm not sure was part of the same event that had cassette tapes! There were a few good ones, but at £2 that adds up if you're buying a couple, & most of them were good as in 'I kinda like the artist & it's a decent album I guess but I ain't exactly desperate'. Apparently they have a store, in a town that's not that far away, but I've never had reason to go there, so I'll go after christmas & see what their full selection is like, since I doubt they brought everything. I did buy a Queen greatest hits album, because there's just banger after banger with no dud tracks.

Holy shit the Game Awards were amazing!

Astro Bot sweep! Balatro raking in all the indies (not my sort of game at all, but so good to see a game made by a single guy winning like this). Honestly, I don't think there was a single award that had me going, 'Are you fucking serious?'. Everything was deserved (well, okay I can't comment on the esports & content creator & similar nonsense). And Shadow of the Erdtree came away with nowt! That's what ya get for double-dipping!

New Onimusha & Okami announced!!! Naughty Dog's upcoming game looks right up my alley (far-future sci-fi with a retro 80s twist? Yes please!) I need to see more than 1 second of gameplay to be fully sold, but I am definitely intrigued. Plus a whole bunch of other announcements that were clearly not for me, but other people are super hyped so I'm very happy for them.
