Holy shit that was dull. Couldn't make it through the first. Felt like I was being preached to while some screamed, 'DO YOU GET IT? DO YOU GET IIIIITTT?' in my ear. It's not that I disagree with the Message (capital M because that's how it felt). I am fully on board with the fact that America is bad, Americans are dumb, & the media is sensationalist, & religion is bad &, like, society, maaaan. But it's been done a million times before, in far more interesting ways (holy shit even that abomination of a reboot handled this stuff with more subtlety). I know it sounds daft to expect subtlety from something DMC related, but there's a difference between 'crazy action & over the top weapons & so-stupid-it's-perfect setpieces' lack of subtlety, & 'teenage reddit atheist' lack of subtlety. The former is way more fun, & when it comes to political narratives you need to give me something more. Fuck, at least make it funny.
And then they started trying to explain demons using science (they're a separate evolutionary branch that adapted to live in a harsh environment & every single culture around the world has the exact same mythology regarding demons, or something) & I just could not keep going any longer.
The animation was also really stiff & mouth movements seemed off, which would be understandable if it was dubbed anime, but it's not.
Thankfully it's in its own continuity separate from the games, so I'm not obligated to care or pay attention to it in any way.
EDIT: Turns out there's a literal scene in the final episode where the US military invaded Hell for resources & committed atrocities against weirdly Middle East-coded demons, while Green Day's American Idiot played. I made a good call noping out early.
Also they whitewashed my girl Lucia.
